"I go to the police street children holding centre and it’s like a dog pound, they all say, pick me, pick me, but I can’t take them all.”
A quote from Didi in 1994
The Lotus Children’s Centre is a Mongolian non-profit, non-government organization working with vulnerable children and families to provide the basic human rights of shelter, food and education. Lotus cares for up to 150 abused, orphaned and abandoned children at any one time. Initially set up to provide basic survival needs for just a handful of children, a kindergarten and a primary school have been developed to provide an educational foundation, and vocational pathways are being developed for older teens. Lotus is entirely dependent on generous donors as they receive zero financial support from Mongolian authorities.
The goals of Lotus Children’s Centre are:
- to provide primary care to all children in their care, including food, healthcare, clothing and accommodation;
- to provide the children with development care so that they can break free of the poverty cycle. As such aiming to give each child a quality education, counseling, self-esteem building tools and access to life skills;
- to provide the children with support in their ‘post Lotus’ lives so that they have a safety net and are able to find employment and tertiary education placements.
From time to time, Lotus has the need of qualified volunteers in a range of disciplines, particularly during the summer months. Please email the centre for an information pack at lotuschildren@gmail.com. For more information please look at our website www.lotuschild.org.
